The Worst Data Story of All Time
Right out of college, I was hired by the government to analyze data. Part of my job was to make sure that one county official transferred their data to another official by a certain date: this was called “rolling” the data. I remember calling one day to see if a county was going to “roll” this week, and they replied, “Yes, weather permitting”.
I wasn’t sure what to say to that, so I asked my boss, who told me that this county rolled their data by printing everything out from one computer, loading into into a giant cart, then rolling the cart across the street to the other office and typing it in again.
